The Parkview Avenue project was completed in Fall 2022. This was a $3M investment to improve the street and make critical investments like:
Upgraded water main
New pavement
Narrowed vehicle lanes to encourage safer speeds & wider bike lanes
New sidewalk
New pedestrian island with button-activated flashing pedestrian sign
New water service lines & hydrants
OVERVIEW
The water main under Parkview Avenue will be replaced this year, and we’re taking this opportunity to make the street work better for the surrounding neighborhoods too.
When the street is rebuilt, the width of vehicle lanes will be reduced to 10 feet wide to calm traffic. The additional space on the roadway will allow the width of the bike lanes to be expanded. New sidewalk will be installed on the north side of the street from Broadway to Barnard, and a crossing with a pedestrian island will be added at Barnard to connect the Oakwood and Oakland Drive/Winchell neighborhoods. Oakwood, Parkview Hills, and Oakland Drive/Winchell all requested improved pedestrian and bicycle amenities in their neighborhood plans.
More new sidewalk will also be installed on Barnard Street, with ramps upgraded to ADA compliant everywhere possible, continuing work started last year.
The project will be completed in two phases starting in late March. The first will require full closure of the street between Knox and Madison for about three weeks. For the remainder of the project, eastbound traffic will be maintained and westbound traffic will have a signed detour. Construction is scheduled to be completed in October.
IMPROVEMENTS
Parkview Avenue reconstruction is a carryover project from the 2021 Capital Improvement Plan list of projects. It was postponed to 2022 due to supply-chain issues. Planned improvements include:

Coordinated Asset Management approach (tax dollars cost-savings)
Repaving and Restriping

TRAFFIC IMPACTS
This project will be completed in two phases.
Phase 1 will be a full closure of Parkview Avenue for east and westbound traffic between Knox and Madison. Phase 1 will last 2 to 3 weeks from March 21 to early April.
Phase 2 will be the remainder of the project from early April to October and will block Westbound Parkview will be closed, Eastbound will remain open.
Other traffic information
Walkers and Bikers will have access to the sidewalk along Parkview Avenue during both construction phases.
Signed Detour signs and other detour markers will be placed prior to March 21st and will be adjusted as needed. Message boards will be placed 2 weeks prior to construction start.
Traffic patterns will be monitored by Public Safety. Traffic or Speeding concerns can be submitted at www.kalamazoopublicsafety.org/traffic
Construction on Parkview Avenue and Stadium Drive will occur simultaneously but should not affect the Parkview Avenue detour during both phases. Stadium Drive will be open with one lane of traffic in both directions. See the 2022 Streets Projects for more information.
WATER SERVICE IMPACTS:
There will be planned temporary water shutoffs and precautionary Boil Water Advisories (BWA) as a result of water main work.
Residents will receive a door hanger at least 48 hours prior to a planned water shut-off and will be notified when precautionary BWAs are lifted.
Information on Boil Water Advisories can be found at www.kalamazoocity.org/bwa
