The City of Kalamazoo’s Natural Features Protection (NFP) initiative has been awarded the Environmental Planning Award by the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP/APA Michigan). The Award recognizes “efforts to create more sustainable and greener communities that reduce the impact of development on the natural environment and improve environmental quality.” This award comes as City staff work to further refine natural features protection in the city through a second phase of the NFP initiative.

The City is currently seeking community input to update zoning standards for Downtown Kalamazoo. Community members are invited to review and comment on proposed updates online, on paper, or over the telephone through Tuesday, September 8.

As part of the Kalamazoo Sustainability Strategy, the City is exploring composting as a way to help reduce food waste in landfills. The City and the Vine Neighborhood Association are working together to host a week of free compost pick up for Vine neighborhood residents as a pilot project.

A coordinated construction project on Oakland Drive is scheduled to begin Monday, April 27. The City of Kalamazoo replaced all lead water services on this section of road in 2019, and new water main will be installed this year before the project is finished with street resurfacing and improved non-motorized features.

In 2019 all lead service lines were replaced and crosswalk signs were installed on Oakland between Parkview and Howard. This year, the Oakland Drive Project will be completed with water main replacement and repaving, as well as pedestrian infrastructure and bike lane improvements.
